The Self-Portrait Project (SPP) is an engaging endeavor that combines art, social impact, and commerce to enable individuals to craft and curate their own visual representations. SPP photo kiosks can be found in various locations across New York City and at events nationwide. Discover a kiosk near you and operate the camera through your mobile device using the dedicated app.
- Capture: Initiate a connection, take snapshots, and view them instantly on your device.
- Share: Share your photos with friends and select your preferred images to contribute to the Self-Portrait Project.
- Browse: Explore a multitude of pictures in the SPP database organized by date, location, or keyword.
Established in 2009, the Self-Portrait Project serves as a photo-centric archive initiative that aims to encapsulate the spirit of New York City and beyond. Each SPP kiosk features a unique setup with a camera positioned behind a two-way mirror. Participants stand before the mirror and utilize their mobile devices to remotely operate the camera, granting them control over how and when they capture their self-portraits.
By shifting the traditional photographer-subject dynamic and empowering individuals to be both photographer and model, the Self-Portrait Project prompts thought-provoking reflections on aspects such as vanity, empowerment, self-awareness, superficiality, and authenticity. The responsibility for shaping these self-images lies entirely with the individual behind the lens.
