Established in 2009, the Self-Portrait Project serves as a photo-centric archive initiative that aims to encapsulate the spirit of New York City and beyond. Each SPP kiosk features a unique setup with a camera positioned behind a two-way mirror. Participants stand before the mirror and utilize their mobile devices to remotely operate the camera, granting them control over how and when they capture their self-portraits.
By shifting the traditional photographer-subject dynamic and empowering individuals to be both photographer and model, the Self-Portrait Project prompts thought-provoking reflections on aspects such as vanity, empowerment, self-awareness, superficiality, and authenticity. The responsibility for shaping these self-images lies entirely with the individual behind the lens.
